The British ruled Palestine from 1920 to 1948. The Brits and the French ended up dividing Palestine. Their actions were seen as an act of betrayal by Arabs, who were promised independence after supporting British military against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. There is a significant Jewish population in the region, and immigration was still ongoing, creating further friction. The Arabs also supported the Axis during World War II. The British rule broke down right when the Arabs and Jews began fighting each other; the Brits cannot decide whether the Jews or the Arabs should rule the region.
