Pedro Alvares Cabral was a portuguese nobleman, explorer, and navigator. He was the first one to see brazil on april 22, 1500.     King Manuel  of portugal sent him on the expedition to india and on his way there he found brazil and claimed it for portugal naming it the "Island of the True Cross". the king renamed it Holy Cross. later it was renamed to brazil for dyewood trees that lived there called pau- brazil. Cabral then stayed in brazil for 10 days.he then continued on to india. on his way way they encountered storms, shipwrecks, and fighting. Cabral successfully traded for spices in india and went back home with only four of the thirteen ships he started with. he retired shortly after that and Vasco de Gama was appointed head of the next mission.
