Answer:
Government interventions to alleviate poverty are sustainable over a long period of time if its policies include:
Adequate provision of goods and services which include subsidize housing, free and quality education and free healthcare.
Free market policies to enhance economic growth which include anticipating rising living standard will be channel to the poorest people in the society.
Minimum wage such as well-regulated labour market for example, statutory minimum wages.
Reliable welfare benefit to the underprivileged or poorest people in the society by providing unemployment benefits, food stamps, housing benefit and supporting the income of the poor people.
However, Poverty can be categorized in two ways:
- Relative poverty: this is when people’s income is far less to the average income of the society.
- Absolute poverty: when people have income that is not sufficient to afford basic necessities of life, for example clothing food and rent, such types of poverty is termed absolute poverty.
However, absolute poverty can be successfully tackled by introducing good economics policy but might be successful in tackling relative poverty.
Good economic policies that government can implement to alleviate poverty and sustain it for a longer period include:
- Promotion of economic growth such as increase the total income of the society, both rich and the poor
- Reduce unemployment which is the main course of poverty
- Increasing Progressive taxes which would take more income from high income earners. this will enable cuts in regressive taxes and helps to increase the poor income
- Increasing welfare benefits to the poor such as universal tax credit, child benefits or food stamps.
