Mary is a small girl from india whose parents die so she is taken into her uncles house in england. He is a hunchback who never likes to see anyone. His wife died in a garden and because of that he locked the door to that garden and buried the key. (10 years before mary arrives) Mary is interested in it and a robin shows where he buried the key and where the door was. She lets herself in privitely and with the help of a boy called Dickon makes it pretty again. One night she discovers that her uncle actually has a boy called Colin but he stays in bed all the time and he is very prone to hysterics because he thinks that he will become a hunchback like his father. She makes him realize that that is all in his head and convinces him to come outside to see the secret garden. The fresh air makes him stronger and eventually he learns to walk but nobody except dickon, mary, and himself knows. At the end of the book his father comes home from where he had been traveling and discovers them in the garden when he is walking and then all of the servents realize that he can walk now.

Hope this helps.....I haven't read the book very recently but it's one of my favs. Please someone tell me if I left out anything big but I think I covered most of it.
