- James Naismith, a Canadian-American physical educator, doctor, Christian chaplain, and sports coach best known as the creator of basketball, was born on November 6, 1861, and he passed away on November 28, 1939. He created the first basketball rulebook after immigrating to America and established the University of Kansas basketball programme. Basketball was officially sanctioned as a competition at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, and Naismith lived to see the establishment of the National Invitation Tournament (1938) and the NCAA Tournament. Basketball was also recognised as an Olympic demonstration sport in 1904. (1939).
