In the court case hernandez v. Texas, the supreme court ruled that the Fourteenth amendment had been violated.

In the historic United States Supreme Court decision Hernandez v. Texas (1954), Mexican Americans and all other racial groups in the country were found to be entitled to equal treatment under the law under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Although technically categorised as white prior to the verdict, Mexican Americans experienced outright discrimination and segregation.

The Supreme Court unanimously decided in Hernandez v. Texas that the Fourteenth Amendment applied to all racial and ethnic groups that were subject to discrimination, thereby expanding the scope of civil rights legislation to encompass Hispanics and all other non-whites.
