the unit cell of a compound containing CO and O has a unit cell shown in the diagram. The Co atoms are on the corners, and the O atoms are completely within the unit cell. (a) what is the empirical formula of this compound? (b) What is the oxidation state of the metal?

Respuesta :

The empirical formulae =  COo2 and oxidation state =  0

  • Suppose the atom is cuboidal shape and it has 8 sides.
  • The CO atoms is a unit cell  are present at each corner of the compound.

At the corners , An  one cobalt atom contributes the 1/8th part of it shared by the others 8 unit cell of Co atoms.

So the total combination of cobalt atom = 1/8×8

                                                                  = 1

The oxygen atom is at body centered cubic structure ,the two atoms per unit cell

8× 1/8 + 1 body centered = 2

so the Empirical formulae = COo2

The oxidation state of a CO = +2

The oxidation state of 02 = -2

The oxidation state of COo2 = +2- 2= 0

The oxidation state of COo2 =  0

After this , The overall charge on the compound is zero that is the compound is neutral.
