Classical conditioning is a form of unconsciously or automatically learning that was discovered by the Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov. An unconditioned stimulus and a neutral stimulus are associated during this learning process to produce a conditioned response.
In order to classically condition a reflex, a neutral stimulus is presented before the reaction itself. The neutral signal in Pavlov's famous experiment with dogs was the sound of a tone, and the naturally occurring reflex was salivation in response to food. The salivation response could be induced by the sound of the tone alone by linking the neutral stimulus (sound) with the unconditioned stimulus (food).
