The concept of ethics in intrinsically related to the universal. Ethics also has no purpose outside of itself. Still, an individual must express their ends or fulfill their goals within the universal and in the realm of ethics, must give up their individuality to universality.

According to Hegel, the purpose of ethics is to merge with the universal. "Fear and Trembling" by Soren Kierkegaard explores the themes of the ethical, individual and the universal.

The purpose of the single individual is to become a part of the universal by annulling his singularity. The ethical is said to be a part of the universal, and as the universal applies to everyone it also means that the ethical applies to everyone. it is also the individual's ethical task  to express himself in this and to annul his singularity in order to become the universal.
