Russians are formed from the East Slavic tribes and their cultural ancestors come from the Kievan Rus. Genetically, the majority of Russians are the same as their eastern and western Slavic counterparts. Unlike the Northern Russians, who belong to the Baltic Sea gene pool in Northern Europe.

The Russian word for Russian comes from the Rus' and Rus' territories. Russians share many historical and cultural features with other Europeans, especially other East Slavic ethnic groups, especially Belarusians and Ukrainians.
