Before the Renaissance, virtually all dramas focused on religious themes because religion was such a major part of the daily lives of those who lived at that time—the medieval times/“dark” ages. Another reason this may be is that those who were creating prominent writing and literature of the time were religious figures; thus, they wrote about what they knew which was that to which their lives was dedicated--religion.

In many parts of Europe, Renaissance art was created parallel to late medieval art and the renaissance art which was produced during the 14th century, 15th century and 16th century in Europe. The religious themes were tied to the present where the ruler acts as a portrait of visiting emperor of Byzantium who is also called as “Scourging” Renaissance painting was different from paintings which were done during the late medieval period and renaissance art majorly emphasis upon the close observation of nature as well as application to the scientific principals in order to use light.

But before the period of renaissance, there was the development of religious themes that preoccupied painters from the period of Italian renaissance and during this era, the artist had more freedom in regards to subject and styles of painting as compared to the medieval painter.
