The key motivation of Mrs. De Winter is that she wants to escape the shadow that has been cast over her by the vengeful ghost of Rebecca - the first wife of Maxim.

Rebecca embodied glitz and elegance, and she believes she will be unable to compete with this deceased paragon for Maxim's affection.

We can see that De Winters' motivation is make even stronger because Mrs. Danvers, the evil housekeeper, infuriates the narrator by repeatedly stating how much Maxim loved Rebecca and would always love her.
