The painting is supposed to represent progress through the idea of Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny posited that American values and ideals were special and that the spread of such through (westward) expansion was a noble pursuit. The woman is supposed to represent America, enlightening White settlers while casting Native Americans out in the "uncivilized" darkness. It does not accurately represent progress as the painting portrays Native Americans as inferior to White Americans as well as demonstrates the forced uprooting of their way of life.
