Mitosis plays an important part in the life cycle of most living things, though to varying extents. In unicellular organisms such as bacteria, mitosis is a type of asexual reproduction, making identical copies of a single cell. In multi-cellular organismsmitosis produces more cells for growth and repair.
Multicellular organisms rely on mitosis for growth and repair. When an animal, plant or other multicellular organism grows, it creates more cells through mitosis. Organisms can also repair some of their tissues, using mitosis to make new cells. Hurt skin, for example, constantly repairs itself through the making of new skin cells or scar tissue.
