The French rulers spent a large portion of the State's money on arts and the lavish palace at Versailles.  It was well known that Louis wasted a vast amount of money on this spending.  To compile this problem, the French had been fighting many wars that they were losing.  The costs of raising and supporting an army for losing efforts quickly plunged the nation into debt.
