Their mission was to cross the western portion of the country after the Louisiana Purchase. Louisiana the the western part of Mississippi had been returned. Most citizens left their home to search for a economic opportunity, but that wasn't the only reason. Lewis and Clark had threatened the Sioux Indians. After, Thomas Jefferson bought Louisiana causing the citizens to move west as an advantage.
