Tom Gradgrind, Jr is the most mysterious character in the novel.
He ends up a degenerate gambler who robs Bounderby's bank to pay his debts. Tom then has to be smuggled abroad in order to avoid going to prison. After many years in exile, he becomes remorseful but dies on the trip back to England.
Thomas Gradgrind is a representative character of the utilitarian principle of Victorian political economy. He represents utilitarianism in its most rigid form in the sphere of education, and later in the book in the sphere of his parliamentary activity.
