Slavery in the United States existed in the South. Slavery in the South was a very big part of how they got their money. Plantations were owned and run by primarily white men where they would pick a cash crop, like cotton or tobacco, and sell it for immense amounts of money. The hot weather and fertile soil in the South made it very easy to grow these things, but it took a lot of work to maintain, so slaves were used. Abolitionists fought for many years to end slavery, as they knew how cruel and inhumane slavery was, but the South relied on slavery to make money. This is where the Civil War came in and the Confederation and the Union fought to overtake one another, the main cause of this being slavery.
