Old man De Lacey and his children were once respected citizens in Paris, France. His son Felix fell in love with a woman named Safie who's Turkish father was falsely accused of a crime. Felix, because of his love for Safie coordinates her fathers escape from prison and succeeds. However, the plot is discovered and the family is then banished from France. It is because of those circumstances that the De Lacey family finds themselves in a cottage in Germany.
