The heterophil antibody test, also known as the mononuclear spot testcan aid in the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis. Infectious mononucleosis is disease cased by Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) and usually presents with severe sore throat, fever, and enlarged lymph nodes. It mostly affects lymphoid tissue therefore producing the characteristic atypical lymphocytes in blood smear. The heterophile antibody test is a laboratory examination to check for antibody titers produced by the body against EBV.
