I think that a big point was that the Germans were finally becoming a major power and that most Germans probably didn't know in full what was happening. You need to remember that before Hitler came into power they Germans had just lost WW1 and were under huge punishments. When Hitler came into power all of sudden now they had large supremely well trained armies and were becoming a major power. They were also beginning to conquer nearby countries incredibly swiftly. This all would give them a rush. Enough of a rush, I think to be able to oversee some tragedies.
