The Missouri Compromise was supposed to "unite" the northern and southern states. The north was labeled "snobby" by the more rural south, who felt that the north thought they were better than the south.
Henry Clay's plan to fix this unrest was to draw a line between the north and south that said that any slave above the boundary line (in the north) would be free as slavery was banned. The latitude line was parallel 36°30′ .
This, however, did more harm than good. He ESSENTIALLY DIVIDED THEM WITH A LINE.
