in order to round this to the nearest thousand you have to look at the hundreds place if the number there is 4 or below you round down, but since here the number is 5 or above then you round up. it would become 4,000

Let's see -

3,839 would be rounded UP to 4,000, since the 3 tells the 8,

"Hey, can I borrow a cup of sugar?" And the 8 says,

"Of course!"

Notice the 3 says "A cup of sugar", which is ONE.

If you add ONE to three, it makes 4. Then the rest of the numbers turn into zeros.

OR, you could go about it with a helpful rhyme:

          5 or more, raise the score!

          4 or less, let it rest!

This just shows you that if the number is bigger, round UP.

If the number is smaller than 4, round DOWN or keep it the same.

In this case, 8 is larger than 3, so we would round up to 4,000.
