A student fills a paper cup with water and puts it in a freezer overnight. when she takes the cup out the next day , she notices that the sides of the cup are pushed out . Why did this happen?

When water is frozen, it expands.  Which of course is what happened to this paper cup with the water in it expand and because it was paper it expand causing the paper cup sides to break open.
