2. to protect claims that had been staked in the Texas Territory--Mexico and Texans still had disputed areas of claim along the southern border. 

Being the US wanted all of what Texas had to offer, they were stationed along the southern border to protect the new land. Mexico and Texas had not settled on the border at the time US soldiers began to occupy the area. Their position actually provoked Mexico into war.
