. . . ”Just a matter of colouring,” [Selvam] said, “or lack of it. It is only a question of getting used to. Who is to say this colour is right and that is not?”

In at least one hundred words, discuss the denotative and connotative meanings of both characters’ statements in this excerpt from Nectar in a Sieve. How do connotative meanings establish a meaningful tone in the text?

The denotative meaning of peculiar is "belonging to one person." The connotative meaning of this word kind of has a negative feeling. In the second sentence, the connotative meaning is slightly more positive than the first statement, although it still seems a bit negative. I think that connotative meanings help establish a meaningful tone in any text because they give of the feeling of if they are negative or positive which in turn helps the readers understand the tone of the overall story.
