Well, the weakened heart muscles may not be able to supply enough blood to the kidneys, which then begin to lose their normal ability to excrete salt and water. This diminished kidney function can cause the body to retain more fluid.

heart failure affects the body by not traveling the blood around the body. If there is no blood going around the body the other organs who were powered by the heart starts shutting down, including the liver stomach lungs heart. The body's cells start dying without oxygen because the oxygen isn't being transported to the cells. These things don't happen right away. your body will slowly die from very little amount of oxygen being traveled through the body. most people last one year before dying of heart failure.
