A theme is the main subject of a story, usually about human nature, life or society. It's not explained or shown openly by the author, but it's implied and, sometimes, only at the end of the book, one may realize what the author meant. The statements A and D can be subjects for a story, B is a piece of information about a forest. C is a statement that can be understood or learned with a story.
