Hey there!
Remember that the Industrial Revolution started in the 18th century, right around the time of the Civil War. During this time, the North and South were divided and had different ideas of what was ethical and what wasn't (in terms of slaves) - which is one of the reasons of what sparked the Civil War.
Therefore, in the South, most things were done with slave labor, and lots of the land was taken up by farms and massive plantations. Most people owned slaves which did all the work for them, and the need for machines that made work more efficient wasn't needed at all as long as slaves were doing it.
However, in the North, things were different. The people there didn't own slaves as they opposed slavery. Thus, they needed a more efficient way to do things, and started to create machines that ran on fuels like coal and helped them do many jobs quicker. They continued to expand, which was why it was called a revolution.
In the South, people were accustomed to slave labor, and changing wasn't all that easy. That's why the North industrialized very fast, while the South continued to use their slaves to do their work. However, after the Civil War ended, they realized how beneficial the machines and advancements the North made really were, and began to industrialize themselves.
Hope this helps!
