A Decomposer breaks down dead plants and animals. They also break down waste of other organisms. Decomposers are very important for the ecosystem because without them, plants would not get the essential nutrients they need and waste and dead matter would pile up. Mold is an example of a decomposer. They eat fruit, berries, and other consumers. By eating consumers, there is a balance in the forest. The form of energy that enters a food chain is sunlight and leaves in the form of heat.
