The answer is a fecal occult blood test (FOBT) that checks for hidden (occult) blood in the stool (feces) by use of a microscope.  The major disadvantage is that it is not very accurate because it is not a 100% reliable as an indicator of colorectal cancer. Sigmoidoscopy is often undertaken following a positive FOBT
