A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and half-free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other.

I believe that the Union can only be preserved by maintaining inviolate the Constitution of the United States as our fathers have made it. That Constitution guarantees to the people of every State the right to have slavery or not have it…each State being left free to decide for itself. The framers of that Constitution…well understood that each one of the thirteen States had distinct and separate interests, and required distinct and separate local laws and local institutions.

Lincoln believes that the United States will either exist as country that allows slavery or a country that outlaws slavery. He argues that the US cannot continue on as a half slave and half free country. This is evident from the following two quotes:

1) "I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and half-free."

2) "It will become all one thing or all the other. "

These quotes are both accurate representations of how Lincoln feels that the country can't exist as having slavery in some places and outlawing slavery in others. The Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act all support his view. These three events were all attempts to solve the issue of slavery in the US. However, none of them are successful in providing a long term solution for this institution.

Lincoln knew that a divided nation just won’t work. He saw that a nation can not be half slave free and half slave.

The first one shows how Lincoln says how a divided house cannot stand. For example, a family fighting each other because of sports teams. Half likes one team and the other likes another sports team. They fight till one team wins. In the end the family is not happy.  

The second one shows how A country cannot be strong half slave and half slave free. They need to choose one or the other.  

What is an historical idea or event that supports Lincoln’s point of view?

There were some compromises like the Missouri compromise, the compromise of 1850, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. These compromises were made to support slaves in some states and to stop slavery in others. These compromises did not work as well as expected and could not have a permanent solution.
