Joanne is in the recoil phase. This phase is within the process known as recovery from sexual violence. They are divided into 3 stages;
The first is the reaction phase and occurs immediately after the sexual assault, characterized by a state of disbelief, fear, guilt, anger, and shame.
The second is the phase of recoil, in this phase the person is apparently calmer, but feelings of distress appear occasionally and there is still no healing process.
The third phase is that of reorganization, in this phase the survivor feels that he has control over his emotions and feels less and less anguish or memories of what happened.
