Hey there :)
Solving by elimination is also known as solving simultaneously.
(equation 1) x - 5y = 19
(equation 2) - x + 3y = - 11
Add them together
x - 5y = 19
+ ( - x + 3y = - 11 )
- 5y + 3y = 19 - 11
- 2y = 8
Divide by - 2 on either side to isolate y
[tex] \frac{-2y}{-2} = \frac{8}{-2} [/tex]
y = - 4
Now you know the value of y, so you can substitute to find x
( You can use either equation, you will have the same answer )
x - 5 ( - 4 ) = 19
x + 20 = 19
x = 19 - 20
x = - 1
Since they want it in the ordered pair format, you should give it in ( x , y ) format
Your answer will be:
( - 1 , - 4 )
