The most important places where the mucus is formed are the lungs, the gastrointestinal tract, the liver and the pancreas. The reduced production of pancreatic enzymes causes a delayed growth, a fatty diarrhea and a shortage of fat-soluble vitamins. Infertility may occur in boys. In newborns there is often a metabolic disorder, referred to as meconium ileus.
