The most reasonable answers would be “I looked sadly into the eyes of my newfound furry friend and bid him a fond farewell” - This shows us that they had to wish their friend goodbye at the end of an adventurous story. #2 “It would be a long time before I wound ever set foot in a boat again - This is telling us that they had an experience on the boat and they would never go on it again.

The guy below is right, but the thing is, newfound furry friend option. Since it's newly found that would mean that it was something quick. Excuse this, but it was a fling. And most probably the character would go on with his life.

It's like saying today I met an ant that would not bite me, I said goodbye to him even though he was my newfound friend! understand?
