In drama, a tragedy is a play that ends with the downfall or death of the main character.
As opposed to comedies, which have happy endings, tragedies (as the name itself says) end tragically. Usually at least one (or many more) individual dies at the end. For example, in Shakespeare's Hamlet, the protagonist dies along with many other characters at the end, making this a tragic play.
