When magma reaches the top, it cools from the crust, it sinks back down to the core. Just like the water, the magma usually goes in a circular motion going up and down. Convection current is what moves plate tectonics/the crust.
a convection current moves in a looped pattern.... much like welding... easier do disperse large amounts of heat in a circular pattern rather than a straight line.
