One gain is that they could actually get an education. In the beginning, they could not attend universities, the most they could get was a genteel education that would turn them into a dame. Eventually, they won their right to join universities and educate and emancipate themselves and become important and high ranked members of the society.
Another is that their newly gotten education enabled them to get higher earning jobs which was not possible without higher education so they could also get their own economic freedom. In older times, women didn't have economic freedom and had to depend on their husbands or their families, and thanks to education they could get their own money.
