The desolate island he had managed to barely swim to drove the lone shipwreck survivor to feel more somber than exhausted.

“Desolate” is a term given to an area that is void of things.  For instance, it is term frequently given to areas void of people and plants, like a desert island.  “Somber” is a term that can mean depressed or sad.  A sentence that contains both of these words follows:  “The desolate island he had managed to barely swim to drove the lone shipwreck survivor to feel more somber than exhausted.”
