Many parents hope their children will be more successful than they have been themselves. Some individuals miss a great deal in life because they are afraid to try new things. Some individuals get into a lot of trouble because they try too many new things. Even mature adults have a childlike side to their personalities. Some adults do not take the ideas of young people seriously.

Jack's father in this story is feeling like he never got to accomplish all of his dreams by lettering in his sport. Because of this, he is trying to transfer those dreams onto Jack, hoping that he will find more success even though it seems like this is not what Jack wants.

While this is a wrong way of parenting, it also puts pressure on the child to achieve the target as his parents are dependent on him. He feels a burden and at times gets depressed for all the expectations and dreams the parents have built around him.
