Before he turned into a giant cockroach, Gregor was a traveling salesman. Though he hated his job, he used to work to relieve his father of his huge debt. Sadly, when Gregor is no longer able to work after his transformation, he becomes a burden to his family.
He is now held captive in his bedroom by his own family members, and his younger sister turns into his caregiver.
Although Gregor’s mother hopes he'll return to his human form, she is scared of him. She faints each time she spots him.
Grete, Gregor’s sister, feeds him and cleans his room but is equally appalled by his appearance.
The only relationship that doesn’t change much is the one between Gregor and his father. Although Gregor used to work tirelessly to earn money for the family, he never received much recognition or sympathy from his father. Now, his father remains as unsympathetic and hard as before. In fact, Gregor’s father tries to physically overpower him; he stamps his foot and frightens him with a cane and a newspaper. Gregor’s father wants nothing to do with his son and wants Gregor to remain locked inside his bedroom. When, on one occasion, Gregor does venture out, his father hurls apples at him. One apple injures him when it gets stuck in his back.
