The natural gas collected from sanitary landfills is used to produce electricity, heat, fuel, and other chemical compounds. More gas can be collected from closed sanitary landfills than open sanitary landfills. A closed sanitary landfill is no longer accepting waste. An open sanitary landfill is accepting waste.
