The actual name of Gandhiji was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. he was given the name Mahatma based on the work he did. The word Mahatma has to be divided into two parts for finding the meaning of the actual word. Maha in Hindi means great and Atma in Hindi means soul. So Mahatma means great soul. Rabindranath Tagore was the person who called him Mahatma based on the work he did for the independence of India.
