Poe's father paid for 1/3 of a years tuition for Poe to go to the University of Virginia, and Poe, having realised this, gambled himself into $2,000 of debt trying to make up for his lack of tuition money. His father refused to help pay off the debt AND refused to pay the rest of tuition. Since he had no money to pay off the debts and to pay for tuition, he had to leave the University. He then joined the army.
