King Henry VIII ordered Hans Holbein, the Younger, to paint the portrait of his only son, Edward VI. It was the portrait of Edward as a little boy at the age of two. In this painting, he holds a golden rattle which resembles a scepter. Under his hand, there is a Latin inscription, which urges him to equal or surpass his father, Henry VIII. Hans Holbein the Younger was German and Swiss artist and painter who worked in Northern Renaissance style. He was the best known as one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century.
