Nixon initially wanted to help boost the US economy by "cutting government spending," since the standard Republican economic platform was that the government hurt private industry, mainly through high taxation.

Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States. He held the position from 1969 to 1974. He had previously served as the 36th vice president of the United States from 1953 to 1961, and prior to that as both a U.S. representative and senator from California.
His first purpose as president was to combat the worst recession since the Great Depression. To achieve that, Reagan pledged to implement the "Reagan Revolution" which focused on reducing government spending, taxes, and regulation. His philosophy was "Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem." Reagan upholded laissez-faire economics.
