Guide to New Historicism and Cultural Studies
This critical analysis theory examines a work of art in the context of both the time period in which it was created and the culture that produced it. This perspective can be applied to any story, novel, or film. In fact, this theory does not distinguish in its analysis any significant differences between creative storytelling and nonfiction texts. The goal is to fully understand a text as a sort of historical artifact—studied in the same way a museum curator might study an ancient object. A study of Shakespeare using this lens provides insight into Elizabethan England and the influence of popular theatre in London.
Essential Questions
What in the text indicates historical events?
What in the text would not fit in a different time period?
What in the text indicates the beliefs and values of the author?
