During this period,
about 300 years ago, Japan was facing ecological disaster because of
deforestation due to unsustainable forest harvesting practices. It is not
entirely clear how it was achieved, but people in Japan, through co-operation,
started practicing sustainable forest management. They also started tree
plantations to re-forest deforested areas. The tree plantations led to advances
in silvicultural technology, including seed production, tree cuttings, pruning
and thinning. Therefore, developed scientific information in silviculture and forest management allowed Japan to increase the number of trees during this period.
