Each layer in a sedimentary rock is younger than the layer under it and older than the layer over it. Therefore the layer of red sandstone is younger than the layer of tan sandstone.

We can known about the ages of the two layers by measuring the amount of the radioactive elements or its fossils.

The sedimentary rock is one which metamorphose from the Igneous form of rock and the one with enough oxygen is usually reddish in color while one with less oxygen is pale in color.

One of the main activities of geologist is to determines the age of a rock either by studying its fossils element or measuring the radioactive elements in it.
